International Overdose Awareness Day 31/08/26 – Every Life Matters
- 28 July 2026
- Emily Michie
31 August is International Overdose Awareness Day – a time to remember everyone who has lost their life to overdose, support those who have been affected, and raise awareness of how overdose deaths can be prevented.
Talking about overdose can be difficult, and this information may feel upsetting for some people. We are sharing these resources because knowing the signs of an overdose and how to respond could help save someone’s life.
The resources below explain:
- what naloxone is and who should carry it
- how to recognise the signs of an overdose
- what to do if someone has overdosed
- how to safely place someone in the recovery position while waiting for emergency help
If you think someone is experiencing an overdose, call 999 immediately. If naloxone is available and opioids may be involved, give naloxone and stay with the person until help arrives.
Need support?
If you or someone you know would like support with alcohol or drug use, help is available.
